Turkey says UN lost neutrality after world body condemns Cyprus roadwork, assault on peacekeepers
Turkey's foreign minister has accused the United Nations of losing its neutrality after the Security Council criticized construction work by Turkish Cypriots in the buffer zone dividing Cyprus. The Security Council condemned the assault on UN peacekeepers and described the construction of a road as a violation of the status quo. Turkish Cypriots had punched and kicked peacekeepers who blocked road construction that would encroach on the buffer zone. Turkey's foreign minister argued that Greek Cypriots had been allowed to proceed with similar projects without obstruction or condemnation.
