Amid backlash, Tamil Nadu govt revokes RTI exemption
Tamil Nadu's government has retracted its Sept 21 general order regarding RTI Act exemptions for law and order. The order aimed to classify law enforcement as an intelligence body, exempting it from transparency laws. Minister C T R Nirmal Kumar's explanation did not mitigate the public outcry and criticism. The order would have restricted access to important information regarding custodial deaths and police violence.
