Bill Gates-backed malaria nets meant to save lives are threatening Africa’s fish stocks
In various regions of Africa, the repurposing of insecticide-treated mosquito nets for fishing is becoming a growing trend. This alarming practice not only jeopardizes fish populations but also poses a serious threat to fragile aquatic ecosystems. Food-insecure families find this adaptation as a quick fix, but the harmful chemicals in the nets could also endanger marine life. A comprehensive strategy is essential to harmonize health measures with ecological integrity.
