Kapdaganda shawls, a heritage of Dongria Kondhs, gained GI recognition in 2024. However, the women artisans are not receiving commensurate economic benefits from their intricate embroidery. Demand for these unique textiles has grown significantly beyond their native Niyamgiri hills. Despite this increased demand, the market remains unorganized, limiting benefits for the Dongria women. Authentic Kapdaganda shawls are becoming harder to find as women prioritize farming over embroidery.
