Flesh-eating parasite moves toward US—scientists find it may be stopped by a scent
A dangerous parasite is spreading north, prompting urgent research into its specific attractants. Scientists are investigating foul-smelling chemical signals that lure the New World screwworm. This flesh-eating fly lays eggs in open wounds, feeding on living animal flesh. Current traps attract related flies, making detection of the dangerous species difficult. Understanding the parasite's preferred odors could lead to better detection and control methods.
