France planted Douglas-fir forests; streams later showed up to 10 times more nitrate
In France and Luxembourg, it was found that Douglas-fir plantations are contributing to significant nitrate elevation. Streams flowing from these regions have nitrate levels that are two to ten times above normal. Analysis of the underlying soil points to excessive nitrate generation. Additionally, groundwater underneath these trees presents noticeably increased nitrate amounts. To alleviate these detrimental effects, diversifying tree species within these areas could prove beneficial.
