In 2016, nations created the world's largest marine reserve in Antarctica
The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area became a global conservation milestone after years of negotiation. This vast Antarctic reserve was established by the CCAMLR member states in 2016. It protects a significant marine ecosystem supporting diverse wildlife and vital phytoplankton blooms. Scientific study of climate change impacts is also a key benefit of this protected area. However, limitations exist regarding fishing and the reserve's 35-year lifespan.
