Invasive Senna Threat Grows: Shade tree now covers 35% of Wayanad sanctuary; tribes lose forest foods

Originally brought to Wayanad in the 1980s for shade, the Senna spectabilis trees have morphed into a troublesome invasive species. Their swift growth pattern has stealthily altered the local biodiversity and ecosystem. Wildlife, including elephants, are now facilitating the spread of Senna seeds, furthering the tree's expansion. This dense canopy obstructs sunlight, adversely affecting the growth of native flora beneath.
