Meta ordered to pay $567 million in New Mexico over teen safety, social media harms

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay $567 million and introduce sweeping changes to protect teenagers on Facebook and Instagram. The judgment follows a $375 million civil penalty awarded earlier, taking Meta’s total liability in the case to nearly $942 million. The court cited concerns over youth mental health, child safety and online exploitation, while ordering limits on teen usage, notifications and adult-minor contact. Meta has rejected the findings and plans to appeal.
