Milwaukee's sewer district has been at the forefront of sustainable practices since the 1920s by producing Milorganite, a unique fertilizer derived from treated wastewater. By harnessing the power of naturally occurring microbes to consume wastewater nutrients, they create a beneficial product. The dead microbes are converted into a stable fertilizer, alleviating landfill waste by over ten billion pounds and supporting slow-release nitrogen for thriving gardens.
