North Carolina peatland emits 130,000 tons of CO₂ yearly after 50 miles of ditches were cut
In a significant ecological effort, North Carolina is working to restore its ancient peatlands that suffered damage from farming practices impacting their carbon storage capabilities. The previous drainage systems caused water levels to drop, resulting in peat exposure to air and increased emissions. Restoration efforts include blocking these ditches to enhance land rehydration and restore the water table.
