Once used to pack Chinese porcelain, this grass now threatens native plants across 16 US states

Japanese stiltgrass, originally brought to the United States in Tennessee around 1918-1919 as packing material, has rapidly propagated across 16 eastern states including New York and Florida. This aggressive invasive species poses a significant threat to local flora by outcompeting native plants. Thriving in both sunny and shaded environments, especially in disturbed areas, urgent management efforts are essential to safeguard ecosystems and preserve biodiversity.
