Since 2022, workers have turned an illegal dump in FDR Park into a 33-acre wetland with 7,000 trees
In South Philadelphia, a once-neglected dumping ground has been reborn as a thriving tidal wetland, nurturing local wildlife. This impressive restoration project earned the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence from Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection. Not only does it serve as a crucial natural flood management system for stormwater, but it also enhances biodiversity by drawing in a variety of birds and mammals.
