Brass-making technology reached southern China through ancient sea routes
Ancient crucibles found in Guangzhou offer new insights into early brass production methods. These ninth and tenth-century vessels show that local cementation techniques were employed. Residues indicate craftspeople produced brass locally rather than importing finished goods. Lead-isotope analysis suggests local raw material sources were utilised. The findings point to wider technological connections with the Islamic world through maritime trade.
