Over 2,500 families affected as demolition of illegal buildings begins in Mumbai's Nalasopara
Demolition began Thursday on 41 unauthorized residential buildings in Nalasopara's Agrawal Nagari, displacing over 2,500 families. The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) is carrying out the demolitions over nine days, following court orders from both the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court. The buildings, occupying 60 acres, include land allegedly encroached upon by a former local politician. Residents, some of whom claim 15 years of occupancy and purchase through cash payments, were given eviction notices and are seeking government assistance for alternative housing.
